The father of the revolutionary type of engine is known to be Rudolf Diesel, who patented his invention in 1897. But the first diesel engines were extremely large and heavy and were used only as stationary units in factories or for operating vessels. Further development of this promising technology became one of the biggest problems among machine manufacturers. 1919-1923 German Maschinenfabrik Augsburg-Nürnberg AG (ABB and MAN) participated actively in adapting diesel engines for use in commercial vehicles. The goal was achieved in 1924 when the world saw the new direct injected diesel engine at the German motor show in Berlin. According to the expert group, the compressor-free diesel engine from MAN was one of the most important innovations offered throughout the exhibition. The series production was not long in coming. The unit's low vehicle weight and the tremendous 80% savings in operating costs (compared to conventional gasification engines of the time) accounted for undeniable sales outlets.
Such a successful car technology increased the development of trucks. In 1928, MAN revealed its first three-axle truck, which was the forerunner of all subsequent MAN heavy trucks. Additional performance related to the MAN brand included the introduction of four-wheel drive, the first German truck engine with exhaust gas turbocharger, engine assembly with electronic injection control, and finally the innovative common rail (CR) injection engine. The latest Euro 6 engines use a third generation CR system, which aims to limit nitrogen oxides, particle emissions and consumption at each operating point.

The TGM trucks in the weight class of 12 to 26 tons combine a high payload and an impressive body option.
Lighter variants of distribution trucks are represented by the MAN TGL series. The 7.5 to 12 tones are powered by 4- and 6-cylinder D08 engines with a power of 150-250 hp. Thanks to its low weight, TGL trucks are suitable for high payloads and offer outstanding driving dynamics and optimum maneuverability.
Engine technology has not yet reached its limit. Competition in the field never rests and legislators continue to put more pressure on manufacturers in terms of carbon dioxide emissions. The MAN representatives argue that they are looking forward to this challenge. No doubt, they can afford such intentions, as they have enough knowledge, experience and passion in their belt.
